It is the prohibited increase in a financial transaction due to a delay in repayment or an extension of time. It is the most common form of interest-based usury, where a lender charges extra in exchange for granting additional time for repayment. This form of riba was widespread in pre-Islamic Arabia, where debtors who could not repay their loans on time were forced to pay an increased amount as a penalty for the delay. This amount is increased in multiple times if the due date of loan payment is extended numerously.
