Kunniyah (کنیۃ)

Referring to someone by their familial relationship names such as mother, father, grandfather, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, etc., is called kunniyah. For example, Prophet Muhammad is also referred to as Abu Al-Qasim as his son was named Qasim. The use of a kunniyah is a sign of respect and honor, so that there is no need to directly address someone.
